An 18-year-old youth, identified as S Mukesh, tragically died in a wild elephant attack near the tea gardens at Puthukkad in Valparai. The incident occurred while Mukesh and his friend Chandrabose were riding a bike on the Sholayar dam estate road. Despite his friend managing to escape unharmed, Mukesh was attacked by the animal after falling from the bike. Local residents rushed him to Murugali estate hospital and then Valparai GH, where he unfortunately passed away. Forest officials revealed that the elephant caused his death by pushing him with its trunk, resulting in rib fractures and punctured lungs. The forest department has taken measures to divert animals away from roadsides to prevent similar incidents.

On a fateful Saturday evening in the serene tea gardens at Puthukkad in Valparai, a small town in Coimbatore, a devastating incident took place that shook the entire community. An 18-year-old youth, S Mukesh, lost his life in a wild elephant attack, leaving his family and friends in mourning.

The Incident

The unfortunate event unfolded as Mukesh and his friend Chandrabose were leisurely riding a bike on the picturesque Sholayar dam estate road at around 6 pm. In a split second, their peaceful ride turned into a nightmare when a wild elephant crossed their path. While Chandrabose managed to escape unscathed, Mukesh was not as fortunate. As he fell from the bike, the massive animal attacked him, leading to grave consequences.

The Aftermath

Local residents acted swiftly, rushing Mukesh to the nearby Murugali estate hospital, and later transferring him to Valparai GH. Tragically, Mukesh succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. The following day, a postmortem was conducted, and his body was released to his grief-stricken family. In a gesture of sympathy, an initial solatium of `50,000 was offered to Mukesh’s father, Suresh.

Forest Department Response

Authorities from the forest department shed light on the harrowing incident, revealing that Mukesh suffered a rib fracture and punctured lungs as a result of the elephant’s attack. In response to the heightened elephant activity near the roadsides, the department deployed two teams comprising a total of 14 staff members to divert the animals back into the forest. The specific elephant responsible for the tragic event was identified as having travelled a distance of 3 km from the Sholayar dam road. Despite the severity of the incident, officials stressed that the animal in question was not inherently aggressive and is currently under close monitoring.
