The Assam police arrested a man from Dhemaji district on dowry charges after his 19-year-old wife allegedly died by suicide. The husband, identified as Ramesh Gogoi, was charged under 304-B (dowry death) and other sections of the Indian Penal Code. The deceased, Tolari Koch Gogoi, had married Ramesh a few years back. The family alleged that Ramesh had eloped with Tolari when she was 15 years old and forcibly married her. Ramesh was accused of promoting dowry and abetment of suicide. Tolari’s mother claimed that Ramesh tortured her daughter physically and mentally, leading to her depression and eventual suicide. The investigation is ongoing, with Ramesh set to appear in court.

Man Arrested for Dowry Charges After Wife Allegedly Dies by Suicide in Assam
Assam police have taken a man into custody in Dhemaji district on charges of dowry after his 19-year-old wife reportedly died by suicide. The husband, identified as Ramesh Gogoi, was arrested following a case filed under section 304-B (dowry death) and other sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The deceased, Tolari Koch Gogoi, married Ramesh from Khubalia in Dhemaji a few years ago. According to police, the family members of the woman had previously filed a complaint against Ramesh for eloping with Tolari when she was just 15 years old and forcibly marrying her.
Authorities are also looking into whether Ramesh is involved in child marriage practices. An investigating officer stated, “As of now, he is being accused of promoting dowry and abetment of suicide. However, further investigation is ongoing, and additional sections may be added to the case if necessary.”
Tolari’s mother alleged that Ramesh subjected her daughter to physical and mental torture while demanding money. She stated, “She was under immense pressure and fear. That fear ultimately led her to take her own life.”

On Friday, the police recovered the woman’s body from Ramesh’s residence, but he managed to flee the scene. However, he was apprehended on Saturday afternoon and will be presented in court on Sunday. The body has been sent for postmortem examination.
