Bhubaneswar: The scorching heatwave sweeping across India has taken a deadly toll, with the nationwide count of suspected heatstroke deaths surpassing the 200 mark. Odisha, in particular, has been severely affected, reporting 45 fresh deaths in the last 24 hours alone. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the intensity of the heatwave conditions over northwest, central, and eastern India is expected to decrease over the next three days, bringing some relief to the affected regions.
With 45 reported deaths in Odisha and one tragic incident of a constable succumbing to suspected heatstroke while on poll duty in Bihar’s Aurangabad district, the total number of heat-related fatalities in the country stood at 211 as of Sunday. Odisha accounts for a significant portion of these casualties, with 141 reported deaths in the state.
The Odisha government has confirmed that out of the 45 deaths reported in the last day, post-mortem examinations have verified 26 cases as being due to heatstroke. While eight deaths were attributed to causes other than sunstroke, investigations are ongoing to determine if the remaining 107 fatalities are indeed linked to the ongoing heatwave. The western part of Odisha has been particularly hard hit, with Sundargarh district bearing the brunt of the heatwave with 35 suspected heatstroke deaths in just three days. Autopsies have confirmed that six of these deaths were indeed caused by sunstroke.

Balangir district in Odisha has reported 20 suspected sunstroke deaths, with four cases confirmed as being due to heat-related illness. Investigations are currently underway for the remaining 16 cases. Sambalpur has reported 18 suspected cases, with post-mortem examinations confirming five deaths as being due to sunstroke.
In a tragic incident in Bihar, a constable named Ram Bhajan Singh collapsed in a bus transporting EVMs in Aurangabad’s Daudnagar on Saturday. He was immediately rushed to Patna’s AIIMS but unfortunately passed away on Sunday.
According to the IMD forecast, heatwave conditions are expected to persist in five western districts of Odisha – Bargarh, Balangir, Nuapada, Sonepur, and Kalahandi – until Wednesday. Authorities are urging residents to take necessary precautions to stay safe during this period of extreme heat and to stay hydrated to prevent heat-related illnesses.
The government is also working on implementing measures to combat the heatwave and prevent further casualties. Awareness campaigns are being conducted to educate the public on how to stay safe during the heatwave, and medical facilities have been put on high alert to provide prompt treatment to those affected by heat-related illnesses.
