The Tragic Incident in Egbeda Community, Rivers State

Recently, a heartbreaking incident occurred in Egbeda community, located in Emuoha Local Government Area of Rivers State. The peaceful community was rocked by violence as a group of youths protested against the deployment of a Community Liaison Officer to a construction company handling the Egbeda-Elele Road Construction project.

Protests Turned Deadly

The situation escalated when the local vigilante group, known as OSPAC, attempted to stop the protesters from expressing their grievances. Despite the warnings, the youths proceeded with the protest, leading to a confrontation at the Egbeda roundabout. Tragically, the protest turned violent when the OSPAC Commander opened fire on the unarmed protesters.

Loss of Life and Injuries

Amidst the chaos, a young man named Oregi from Omuipo clan lost his life after being struck by a bullet. Several other protesters sustained injuries from the gunfire, further escalating the tense situation in the community. The use of excessive force by the vigilante group resulted in a tragic loss of life and left the community in mourning.

Retaliation and Arrests

Following the death of Oregi, enraged youths mobilised and retaliated by setting ablaze the residence of the OSPAC Commander, identified as Muffi. The retaliation further plunged the community into turmoil, prompting the intervention of the police. Subsequently, nine individuals, including members of the vigilante group, were arrested in connection with the incident.
