The Battle Against Rice Smuggling: A Look at the Civil Supplies-Criminal Investigation Department’s Efforts in Pollachi

Located in the picturesque region of Pollachi, Tamil Nadu, lies the battleground in the war against smuggling of rice meant for the Public Distribution System. The Civil Supplies-Criminal Investigation Department (CS-CID) has identified 10 key border crossing areas between Tamil Nadu and Kerala as hotspots for this illegal activity.

Increased Monitoring

With easy connectivity to Kerala, these border points have become prime targets for smugglers looking to transport PDS rice across state lines. To combat this, the CS-CID has ramped up monitoring efforts in areas such as Walayar, Velanthavalam, and Semmanapathi, among others. Special teams have been deployed to these locations to crack down on smuggling activities.

Fighting Crime on Multiple Fronts

Not content with just tackling rice smuggling, the CS-CID has also been keeping a close eye on the illegal supply and usage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas cylinders sold with government subsidies. In addition, cases of storing recycled oil and lube oil have also been unearthed, resulting in significant seizures.

Results and Consequences

Since January, the CS-CID teams in Pollachi have booked 157 cases related to rice smuggling, resulting in the seizure of 61.5 tonnes of ration rice. A total of 166 individuals involved in smuggling and illegal trade have been arrested, with some facing harsh consequences such as detention under the Goondas Act.

Furthermore, the department has seized various other items such as toor dal, palm oil, and vehicles used in illegal activities. Revenue amounting to Rs 21.35 lakh has been raised through the auctioning of seized vehicles, showing that the CS-CID is not only fighting crime but also hitting smugglers where it hurts the most – their pockets.

Challenges Ahead

Despite these successes, challenges remain as the use of PDS rice as fodder in poultry farms is on the rise. Poultry operators are finding ways to illegally procure raw ration rice and convert it into broken rice for their operations. The CS-CID is now closely monitoring poultry farms to ensure that such illegal activities are curbed.

As the battle against smuggling continues, the CS-CID in Pollachi remains vigilant, determined to protect the integrity of the Public Distribution System and uphold the law. With their unwavering commitment and tireless efforts, the department stands as a beacon of hope in the fight against illegal activities in the region.
