Tragedy Strikes Saphai Village in Meghalaya

In a heartbreaking turn of events, three minors lost their lives and several others are fighting for survival after consuming wild mushrooms in Saphai village under Laskeiñ C&RD Block in Meghalaya’s West Jaiñtia Hills district. The incident has left the community reeling with shock and grief.

Immediate Response

Upon receiving news of the mushroom poisoning, the authorities sprang into action. WJH superintendent of police (SP) Chemphang Syrti confirmed that three families in Saphai village were affected by the toxic mushrooms. They were rushed to the government MCH hospital in Jowai for urgent medical treatment.

The first family affected by the poisoning included a mother, Jumonlang Suchiang, and her four children. Tragically, three of her children – Wansalan, Kitlangki, and Riwanka – succumbed to the poisoning at the hospital, while Jumonlang and her infant son are currently in critical condition at NEIGRIHMS.

Medical Crisis Unfolds

Dr C Daniala, the Medical Superintendent (MS) of NEIGRIHMS, provided insights into the critical condition of the patients. From a 56-year-old woman with multiple organ dysfunction to a 70-year-old man battling liver and kidney issues, the hospital is working tirelessly to stabilize their health.

A 12-year-old girl is also fighting for her life, dealing with acute liver failure and kidney problems. The medical team at NEIGRIHMS is providing round-the-clock care and support to these patients in their time of need.

NEIGRIHMS spokesperson Dr Vikash emphasised the importance of awareness in rural areas regarding mushroom consumption. With mushroom poisoning cases on the rise in Jaiñtia Hills, it is crucial for people to know which mushrooms are safe to eat and which ones to avoid.

“Mushroom poisoning can have devastating consequences, and caution should be exercised when foraging for wild mushrooms. Education and awareness can go a long way in preventing such tragic incidents in the future,” Dr Vikash stressed.
