Man Suspected of Killing Minneapolis Police Officer Identified

Authorities have identified the man suspected of shooting and killing Minneapolis police officer Jamal Mitchell in the Whittier neighborhood of south Minneapolis. Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed, 35, was found dead of multiple gunshot wounds in the 2100 block of Blaisdell Avenue, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner’s office.

Details of the Incident

The tragic incident occurred when police responded to reports of a double shooting in an apartment building on Blaisdell Avenue. Officer Mitchell, 36, was ambushed and fatally shot by Mohamed. Osman Said Jimale, 32, was also found dead inside the apartment, having been shot multiple times. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is awaiting ballistics testing results to confirm whether Mohamed was responsible for Jimale’s death as well.

Police Response

Minneapolis police received the call about the shooting at 5:15 p.m. Thursday. Officer Mitchell stopped to help an injured man, Mohamed, about a block away from the building. While rendering aid, Mohamed pulled out a gun and assassinated Officer Mitchell. Two other officers fired their weapons during the incident, resulting in Mohamed’s death at the scene.

Officer Mitchell succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while another officer and a firefighter were also injured in the exchange of gunfire.
