Kochi: Bellamkonda Ram Prasad, also known as Prathapan (41), was arrested by Kerala police for his involvement in an international human trafficking network focused on organ harvesting. Operating under the guise of a doctor, he targeted uneducated villagers, presenting himself as Dr Ram Prasad at a clinic in Hyderabad. Prathapan’s role included sourcing donors for organ harvesting in Iran, with victims mainly from states like Delhi and Maharashtra. The racket offered donors up to Rs 8 lakhs, while recipients paid between Rs 50 lakh and Rs 1 crore for the illegal surgeries. Prathapan, along with accomplices Sabith Nasar and Sajith Shyam, faces charges under IPC and the Transplantation of Human Organs Act.

The Arrest of Organ Trafficking Mastermind in Kochi
In a recent development, the Kerala police have arrested Bellamkonda Ram Prasad, also known as Prathapan, the alleged mastermind behind an international human trafficking network involved in organ harvesting. The arrest took place in Hyderabad, where Prathapan used to operate under the guise of a doctor.
Operating in Hyderabad
Prathapan introduced himself as Dr Ram Prasad to his victims, most of whom were uneducated villagers. He conducted his illegal activities from a building in Khairatabad, a few kilometers from Hyderabad. Interestingly, the ground floor of the building housed a legitimate clinic run by another doctor named Dr BVS Ram Prasad. Prathapan used this setup to camouflage his illegal dealings.
Role in Organ Trafficking Racket
Prathapan’s role in the racket primarily involved identifying potential organ donors and preparing them for organ harvesting in Iran. The victims, mainly from states like Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Andhra, were lured with promises of up to Rs 8 lakhs for their organs. The operations in Iran were managed by Keralite Sabith Nasar, who was also arrested in connection with the case.
Arrest and Investigation
Following his arrest in Hyderabad, Prathapan was brought to Kerala for questioning by Ernakulam Rural SP Vaibhav Saxena. The police also apprehended Sajith Shyam, suspected of handling the financial affairs of the gang. The investigation team’s next target is Madhu, believed to be in Iran, who facilitates dealings with hospitals and doctors in the country.

The details of the organ trafficking ring came to light after the arrest of Sabith from Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) based on information from central agencies.
