Man Killed in Clash Over Food Distribution in Pirojpur’s Kawkhali Upazila

A tragic incident unfolded today in Pirojpur’s Kawkhali upazila as a clash between two groups over the distribution of food assistance among cyclone-affected people resulted in the death of a man. The deceased, identified as Abdur Rouf, 50, was the brother-in-law of Khadija Begum, a member of the Chirapara Parsaturia Union Parishad.

Abdur Rouf, a carpenter by profession and father of four, was caught in the middle of a heated dispute over the distribution of food aid. The food assistance, meant for 30 families in the area, was received by Khadija Begum from the lawmaker of the Pirojpur-2 constituency.

Unable to distribute the aid to every family, tensions rose as locals, including Sanjoy Gosh, Sanjeeb Gosh, Shisir Gosh, Solomon Sarder, Humayun Majhi, Kamal Patikar, Dilip Patikar, and Dipok Patikar, confronted Khadija Begum at her home. The situation escalated when they allegedly beat her husband, Mojibor Rahman, during the confrontation.

As the matter intensified, Khadija Begum and her family members, including Abdur Rouf, decided to seek the intervention of the Union Parishad Chairman. However, before they could reach their destination, a group of 8-10 individuals attacked them with sticks and sharp weapons, leaving several family members injured.

Tragic Outcome

Abdur Rouf, critically injured in the clash, was rushed to Kawkhali Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries around 10:30 am today.

Police Response

Officer in Charge (OC) of Kawkhali Police Station, Mohammad Humayun Kabir, confirmed the clash between the two groups over the food distribution issue. He stated that both sides sustained injuries during the altercation, which tragically led to Abdur Rouf’s untimely demise.

Following the incident, police detained two individuals in connection with the violence. The legal process to file a case related to the clash is currently underway as authorities seek to bring those responsible to justice.
