Aizawl Landslide Tragedy: Death Toll Rises to 29

In a devastating turn of events, the death toll in landslides in Mizoram has climbed to 29 after the body of a 34-year-old woman was found in Tlawng River in Kolasib district, officials confirmed. The woman, identified as Vanlalruali, and her husband had been missing since being hit by a landslide in Aibawk village in Aizawl district on Tuesday.

The search for the missing individuals, including a six-month-old baby, is still ongoing in the region. The woman’s body was discovered in the river in Hortoki village in Kolasib district, which shares a border with Assam, on Friday. Her family members positively identified her after her body was retrieved from the river and taken to Kawnpui.

Multiple Landslides in Aizawl District

The tragic deaths occurred as a result of multiple landslides in Aizawl district earlier in the week. Of the deceased, 21 were locals, while eight were migrants from Jharkhand and Assam. The Chief Minister of Mizoram, Lalduhoma, has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased.

In response to the natural disaster triggered by Cyclone Remal, the government has allocated Rs 15 crore to address the aftermath and provide relief to those affected by the landslides. The incident has left the community in mourning and has underscored the urgent need for disaster preparedness and mitigation measures in the region.
