The Identification of Human Remains in Conception Bay South

In a breakthrough discovery, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) has successfully identified human remains found in Conception Bay South back in May 2001. Through the innovative use of genetic genealogy, investigators have finally been able to put a name to the victim.

Uncovering the Truth Behind the Homicide

The individual in question has been identified as Temistocle (Temy) Casas, who tragically died as a result of homicide. His remains were discovered in a wooded area off Minerals Road, sparking a decades-long investigation to determine his identity.

A Collaborative Effort with Othram Inc.

In August 2021, the RNC joined forces with Othram Inc., a private company based in Texas that specializes in genetic genealogy and forensics. After months of meticulous work, a DNA profile was successfully extracted from the remains and uploaded to GEDmatch in January 2022.

Connecting with Family Through DNA

After a match was made with a fourth cousin in October 2022, further breakthroughs ensued. In February 2024, a match with a first cousin finally led investigators to immediate family members who were able to confirm the identity of Temistocle (Temy) Casas through DNA testing.
