The Day I Became a Billboard Star for the Portland Timbers

In 2015, I had the incredible opportunity to be featured on a massive billboard for the Portland Timbers soccer club. The selection process was intense, with hundreds of Oregonians vying for online votes to have their photo chosen. After a week of voting, my picture was ultimately selected as a winner!

As a butch lesbian who had always felt like an outsider, the experience was both humbling and terrifying. Coming from a background of hiding my true self from the world, seeing my image displayed on a 20-foot billboard with axes over my shoulders was a moment of immense pride and transformation.

A Journey of Self-Acceptance

Reflecting back on my childhood, I recalled growing up as a closeted lesbian in the late 1970s. Throughout my adolescence, I struggled with my identity, often being labelled as just a tomboy due to my affinity for stereotypically masculine activities and clothing. The fear of being judged for my sexual orientation loomed over me in a culture rife with homophobia.

Living in a time when few people were openly LGBTQ+, I grappled with my true self in isolation, yearning for acceptance and love. The weight of societal expectations pushed me to conceal my identity, leading to a tumultuous journey of self-discovery and acceptance.

Embracing Authenticity

It wasn’t until I met my first love at 26 in the mid-90s that I found the courage to come out publicly. The gradual shift towards LGBTQ+ visibility and acceptance in society spurred me to embrace my authenticity, paving the way for a newfound sense of freedom and self-acceptance.

Witnessing prominent figures like Ellen DeGeneres coming out on a national platform further validated my own journey, instilling a sense of belonging and empowerment within me. The growing momentum of LGBTQ+ representation in mainstream media signified a significant step towards inclusivity and acceptance.

Meeting Snapper: A Heartwarming Connection

Years after my billboard debut, I had the privilege of meeting Snapper, an 8-year-old girl who had courageously come out as gay. Her story resonated deeply with me, reminding me of the struggles I faced in my own youth. Despite not having children of my own, I found a profound connection with Snapper and her journey of self-discovery.

Snapper’s unwavering authenticity and bravery touched my heart, prompting me to become a mentor and guide in her life. Through our conversations and shared experiences, I witnessed Snapper’s growth and resilience as she navigated the complexities of identity and acceptance.

Empowering the Next Generation

As Snapper’s journey unfolded, I realized the profound impact of visibility and representation in shaping one’s sense of self. Serving as a beacon of hope and affirmation for Snapper, I embraced the opportunity to empower and support her in embracing her authentic identity.

Our bond transcended mentorship, evolving into a lasting connection built on mutual understanding and support. Through shared experiences and heartfelt conversations, Snapper found solace and strength in knowing that she was not alone in her journey.

A Journey of Resilience and Empowerment

My encounter with Snapper underscored the transformative power of acceptance and support in shaping the lives of LGBTQ+ youth. As we navigated challenges and celebrated milestones together, I witnessed the resilience and courage that defined our shared journey towards self-acceptance and empowerment.

Embracing our differences as strengths and embracing authenticity as a source of empowerment, Snapper and I embarked on a journey of growth and self-discovery. Our connection symbolized the enduring power of mentorship and support in fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance within the LGBTQ+ community.

Embracing Authenticity and Empowering Others

As I reflect on my journey from a closeted youth to a visible advocate for LGBTQ+ representation, I am reminded of the profound impact of authenticity and visibility in transforming lives. Through my connection with Snapper and the shared experiences we have navigated together, I am inspired to continue empowering and supporting LGBTQ+ youth in their journey towards self-acceptance and authenticity.

Embracing our unique identities and celebrating our differences as strengths, Snapper and I exemplify the resilience and empowerment that define the LGBTQ+ community. Our bond serves as a beacon of hope and affirmation for all individuals seeking to embrace their true selves and live authentically.
