The accused, Ballamkonda Ram Prasad, also known as Prasad, was captured in a hotel in Hyderabad on May 30 and has been brought to Kochi for further proceedings. District Police Chief Vaibhav Saxena described Prasad as the key figure in the Hyderabad-based racket, known for his expertise in matching donors with recipients. Prasad’s modus operandi involved using social media and phishing tactics to identify potential donors. The investigation into the case, which has already led to multiple arrests, is ongoing.

In a significant development, the Ernakulam Rural police’s special investigation team (SIT) has successfully apprehended the mastermind behind an illegal organ trade and human trafficking operation based in Hyderabad. The accused, identified as Ballamkonda Ram Prasad, also known as Prasad, aged 41 and hailing from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, was captured at a hotel in Hyderabad on May 30.

District Police Chief (Ernakulam Rural) Vaibhav Saxena confirmed that Prasad was considered the ‘go-to person’ not only for the Hyderabad racket but for various other illegal operations due to his remarkable ability to match donors with recipients seamlessly. His expertise in finding suitable donors resulted in a high success rate of organ transplants, with 60% of the donors he provided being accepted without rejection by hospitals.

Details of the Operation

Prasad had a pivotal role in coordinating the movement of donors and recipients, including facilitating the transfer of a Malayali donor, Shameer, from Palakkad to Iran. Despite being referred to as a Malayali, Shameer originally hails from Pollachi, Tamil Nadu. Prasad maintained direct communication with other key players in the racket, particularly Madhu, who is currently located in Iran.

According to Mr. Saxena, Prasad’s involvement in the illicit trade predates the COVID-19 pandemic, with reports suggesting that he initially intended to donate a kidney before transitioning into a facilitator role within the operation. His recruitment of donors primarily involved leveraging social media platforms, browsing donor association websites, and potentially engaging in phishing activities. Prasad may have even employed individuals with technical skills to manage the technological aspects of the operation.

Covert Operation and Arrest

The SIT meticulously planned Prasad’s arrest to mitigate the risk of interference or escape, considering his influential position within the illicit organ trade network. Despite being under suspicion since the detention of Sabith Nasar from Thrissur, Prasad managed to evade detection until his recent apprehension in Hyderabad.

The investigation into the organ trafficking case was initiated following the detention of Sabith Nasar at the Kochi airport upon his return from Iran. Subsequent arrests of Sajith Shyam and Prasad have significantly advanced the case, with efforts underway to bring back Madhu from Iran through legal channels.

Prasad is expected to face charges of conspiracy, human trafficking, and violations of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act. Following his court appearance and subsequent remand in judicial custody, the police will seek his custody for further interrogation and legal proceedings.
