The driver of the SUV, later identified as Robert Brown, failed to stop, leading to a chase initiated by the officer. The pursuit ended on Pepper Tree Lane, where Brown ran into the backyard of a home with the officer closely following behind.

Body Camera Footage

Footage released by the Brown family shows that Brown had a handgun that fell to the ground during the chase. He picked up the weapon before throwing it over the fence and jumping over himself. As Brown knelt on the ground on the other side of the fence, next to the gun, the officer fired his gun, claiming self-defense.

Family’s Response

Willie Brown, the father of the deceased, questioned the officer’s actions, stating, “You shoot him in the back for a traffic violation and say he had a gun. Come on.” The family believes the use of lethal force was unnecessary and illegal.

Police Investigation

Police revealed that a witness captured the shooting on their cellphone. Brown was shot and later died in the hospital. A 9mm pistol was found at the scene. The authorities also mentioned that Brown had a warrant out for his arrest and a criminal history.

Call for Accountability

Victoria Brown, Willie Brown’s sister, expressed the family’s grief over the loss of their loved one. She demanded accountability from the San Bernardino police, stating, “They took a son, a brother, a father, and a friend. Who’s next?”
