Sri Lanka has apprehended the alleged handler of four Sri Lankan nationals who were detained at Ahmedabad airport in India due to their suspected ties with the banned Islamic State (ISIS) group.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Sri Lanka took into custody 46-year-old Pushparaja Osman in Colombo on Friday, following an intensive search operation.
Authorities in Sri Lanka had offered a reward of Rs. 2 million for any information leading to the arrest of Osman, who was believed to have been in contact with the four individuals apprehended at the Ahmedabad airport.

The Arrest in India
The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) made the arrests at Ahmedabad airport, where the four Sri Lankan men, suspected of having links to ISIS, had arrived on an Indigo flight from Colombo to Chennai on May 19.
Police spokesperson Nihal Thalduwa mentioned that investigations were ongoing to determine the extent of the men’s involvement with the terror group. “We are yet to confirm if they were actively promoting ISIS ideology in Sri Lanka,” he stated.
Enhanced Security Measures
Following the tragic Easter Sunday attack in 2019 that claimed the lives of over 270 individuals, Sri Lankan authorities have been vigilant about potential terrorist activities in the country. The recent arrests in India have further heightened security concerns.
Efforts to uncover any potential connections between local extremist groups and ISIS have been prioritized by law enforcement agencies in Sri Lanka.
Individual Profiles
Among the arrested individuals, Mohammed Nusrat, a businessman dealing in telecommunication and electrical equipment, had a business presence in Colombo. He imported goods from countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and Dubai.
Mohammad Nafran, the son of a notorious criminal in Sri Lanka, was also taken into custody. The other detainees, Mohammad Faris and Mohammad Rashdeen, both from Colombo, had their own unique backgrounds and involvements in various activities.
Faris, who previously worked as a cart puller in Pettah, had encounters with law enforcement prior to his departure to India. Rashdeen, suspected of involvement in the trafficking of illegal substances, had been arrested and released on bail on previous occasions.
