A bandit was shot during a robbery at the Good Luck Chinese Supermarket in C-Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown. The incident occurred when two gunmen entered the supermarket, held the owner at gunpoint, and demanded cash and phone cards. A security guard armed with a shotgun responded to the owner’s cries for help and fired a shot at the bandits, hitting one of them. The wounded suspect, identified as 23-year-old Oniel Batson, sought treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital for gunshot wounds to his finger and jaw. The police are still searching for the other suspect involved in the robbery.

Kaieteur News – A bandit was injured during a robbery at the Good Luck Chinese Supermarket situated in C-Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown, on Thursday.

According to reports, two armed individuals forcibly entered the supermarket around 16:50 hrs, where they confronted the female owner, Zheng Siyi, and demanded cash and phone cards. The terrified owner raised the alarm by screaming for help.

A security guard stationed at the establishment responded to the distress call and emerged from his guard hut with a 12-gauge shotgun. Upon encountering the suspects, he discharged a round that struck one of the bandits, causing them to flee the scene.

As the perpetrators made their escape, they retaliated by firing shots at the security guard. In CCTV footage reviewed by Kaieteur News, the guard can be seen taking cover and dodging bullets as the exchange of gunfire unfolded.

Meanwhile, the injured suspect has been identified as 23-year-old Oniel Batson, a resident of Durban Street, Lodge, Georgetown. Batson sought medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for gunshot wounds to his middle finger and lower jaw, claiming he was shot. Subsequently, he was apprehended by the police and is currently receiving treatment under police supervision.

Law enforcement authorities are actively pursuing the second suspect involved in the robbery.

The incident at the Chinese supermarket in Sophia serves as a reminder of the risks faced by businesses and individuals in the area, highlighting the importance of security measures to deter criminal activities.
