Man Arrested for Auto Theft in Evansville
A 38-year-old man from Evansville, Justin S. Steele, found himself in hot water after being charged with auto theft. The incident took place in the bustling city of Evansville, Indiana, where officers caught Steele driving a stolen 2015 Mercedes.
Alert from Flock Camera Leads to Arrest
On a Saturday morning just before 2 a.m., officers received an alert from a Flock Camera reporting a stolen gray Mercedes heading westbound on Washington Avenue in Evansville. With this information in hand, an Evansville Police Officer was able to spot the stolen vehicle on Highway 41 shortly after.
High-Speed Chase Ensues
The stolen Mercedes came to a stop at a red light at the intersection of Walnut and 41, giving officers a chance to catch up. However, Steele had other plans. Allegedly accelerating at a high rate of speed, he cut off another driver to take the E. Lloyd Expressway exit.
The chase continued at speeds of 80 mph on the Lloyd Expressway, with officers doing their best to keep up with the fleeing suspect. Eventually, the pursuit came to a halt when the Mercedes stopped at a red light on S. Green River Road.

Arrest and Interrogation
Steele was promptly ordered to turn off the car, step out, and walk backwards towards the officer. He was then taken into custody and questioned about the stolen vehicle. In an attempt to explain his actions, Steele claimed that a man had given him the keys to the Mercedes the previous day and allowed him to drive it around.
However, the plot thickened when the owner of the car, the man’s girlfriend, stated that she had not given Steele permission to drive her vehicle. She confirmed that he had never driven it before and was unsure how he had obtained the only key to the car. The victim’s boyfriend also corroborated this, stating that he had not authorized Steele to take the car.
