Investigation of Officer-Involved Shooting in Wilmington

Delaware State Police are currently looking into an officer-involved shooting that took place in Wilmington last night. The incident occurred on May 31, 2024, at around 9:19 p.m. at a residence on Ferris Road.

Details of the Incident

According to officials, the incident began when two teenagers on Ferris Road spotted a man, later identified as Jonathan Kreiser from Smyrna, Delaware, walking in the street and waving a gun. Kreiser, who was reported to be suicidal, made alarming statements indicating that he wanted the teenagers to shoot him. However, one of the teens managed to persuade Kreiser to put the gun down. They then removed the magazine from the gun and placed both items on the sidewalk before contacting 911 to report the situation.

Upon the arrival of the first trooper on the scene, negotiations with Kreiser began. The trooper repeatedly instructed Kreiser to show his hidden hand, but Kreiser refused to comply. Instead, he picked up the gun from the sidewalk, reloaded it, and turned towards the trooper, prompting the trooper to fire his weapon at Kreiser.

Outcome of the Incident

Following the shooting, troopers provided first aid to Kreiser until emergency medical services arrived. He was then taken to a nearby hospital via ambulance for treatment of non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and is currently in stable condition. Fortunately, no one else was harmed during the incident.

Additional Information

It was later discovered that Kreiser was the subject of a Gold Alert issued by the Smyrna Police Department earlier on the same day. The alert indicated that Kreiser had taken his brother’s firearm and was in a suicidal state.

As per standard operating procedures, the trooper involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending a use of force investigation conducted in collaboration with the Delaware Department of Justice. The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit is currently actively investigating the incident.
