Delaware State Police are currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place in Wilmington on the evening of May 31, 2024. The incident occurred at a residence on Ferris Road, where a man, later identified as 36-year-old Jonathan Kreiser from Smyrna, Delaware, was reported to be suicidal.

**Details of the Incident**

Two teenagers on Ferris Road initially observed Kreiser walking in the street while brandishing a gun and making statements that indicated he wanted them to shoot him. One of the teens managed to convince Kreiser to put the gun down, and subsequently removed the magazine from the weapon before calling 911 to report the situation.

Upon the arrival of the first responding trooper, negotiations began with Kreiser. Despite numerous commands to show his hidden hand, Kreiser refused to comply. He then picked up the gun from the sidewalk, reloaded it, and turned towards the trooper, prompting the officer to fire his weapon.

**Outcome of the Incident**

Following the shooting, troopers provided first aid to Kreiser until EMS arrived and transported him to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Fortunately, no one else was injured during the incident. Kreiser was later charged with Aggravated Menacing and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony.

It was later discovered that Kreiser was the subject of a Gold Alert issued by the Smyrna Police Department earlier that day, indicating that he had taken his brother’s gun and was in a suicidal state.

As per standard procedures, the trooper involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending a use of force investigation in collaboration with the Delaware Department of Justice. The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit continues to actively investigate the incident and urges anyone with information to come forward.
