Minneapolis officials have identified Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed as the shooter who killed a police officer during a chaotic mass shooting, leaving four injured and a civilian dead. Mohamed ambushed officer Jamal Mitchell, turning on him during a shootout in the Whittier neighborhood. Mohamed, a convicted felon, was ineligible to carry a firearm and had an active warrant for his arrest. He continued to shoot Mitchell after he fell, resulting in his own death from multiple gunshot wounds. A memorial for Mitchell is growing outside the 5th Precinct, with a fundraiser hosted by the Apostle Supper Club to support his family. Donations can also be made through the LELS Benevolent Fund.

The Suspect and the Officer

Officials have identified the man responsible for the shooting as Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed. The 35-year-old man “ambushed” police officer Jamal Mitchell, who had responded to a shots-fired call at the apartment complex. Mitchell, a dedicated officer with a passion for improving community-police relations, tragically lost his life in the line of duty.

The Shootout

According to police reports, Mohamed, who was prohibited from carrying a firearm due to previous convictions, turned on Officer Mitchell and shot him. The chaotic exchange of gunfire resulted in Mohamed’s death at the scene, as well as injuries to several individuals, including civilians and emergency responders.

Tragically, a civilian, later identified as 32-year-old Osman Jimale, was found dead inside the apartment. Another civilian and a man sitting in his car outside the building were also injured in the crossfire.
