Heavy Rains and Landslides Wreak Havoc in Kerala

Over the weekend, Kerala experienced torrential rains and strong winds that resulted in tragic incidents and disrupted the lives of many residents. The district of Thrissur bore the brunt of the severe weather, with two people losing their lives due to lightning strikes. Ganeshan, aged 50, was struck by lightning near Velur, while Nimisha, aged 42, met with a similar fate in Triprayar.

Impact on Transportation and Infrastructure

The heavy rains also led to landslides and waterlogging in various parts of Thrissur district, causing significant disruptions to transportation. A landslide on the railway track between Thrissur and Puthukkad halted the operation of four trains, including the Thiruvananthapuram-Shoranur Venad Express and the Ernakulam-Bengaluru Intercity Express. The signal system near Thrissur railway station was also damaged due to water ingress.

Flooding in Thrissur City

The city of Thrissur witnessed heavy showers that resulted in flooding in several areas, including North Stand, Swaraj Round, Kokkala, and Punkunnam. The residents in these localities faced challenges in their daily lives due to the inundation caused by the incessant rainfall.

Rescue Operations and Relief Efforts

Despite the challenging conditions, rescue operations were conducted to save individuals trapped in mudslides and landslips. In Thodupuzha, a 33-year-old woman named Padathil Anujamol was rescued after being trapped in a mudslide at Karippilangadu. Additionally, passengers in a car stuck in a mudslide at Nadukani were successfully rescued by authorities.

Considering the severity of the situation, the Idukki District Collector, Sheeba George, issued an order prohibiting night travel in the entire district. Travel on the Thodupuzha-Puliyanmala stretch was particularly restricted due to the heavy rainfall and landslips reported in the area. Two relief camps were set up at Velliyamattom to provide assistance to those affected by the adverse weather conditions.

As the people of Kerala continue to grapple with the aftermath of the devastating weather, it is essential for authorities and residents alike to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and well-being.
