Tragic Accident Claims Life of City Employee in Downtown Houston

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A devastating incident unfolded in downtown Houston on Friday morning as a pedestrian tragically lost their life after being struck by a METRO bus. The victim has been identified as Damilola Matuluko, a valued member of the city’s HR Operations Employee Relations team.

The heartbreaking event took place near the intersection of Rusk and Smith at approximately 7:40 a.m. According to Lt. Tim McClelland of the METRO Police Department, the pedestrian was in the crosswalk and had the right of way when the fatal collision occurred.

McClelland explained that as the traffic light turned green, the bus made a turn onto Rusk, resulting in the tragic accident that claimed the life of Damilola Matuluko. The bus involved was operated by First Transit, and the contract driver is fully cooperating with the authorities.

Despite the presence of two passengers on the bus, no other injuries were reported. The entire community is mourning the loss of Damilola, who had only been with the HR Department for a short time but had already made a significant impact on her colleagues.

City of Houston HR Director Jane Cheeks expressed her sorrow, stating, “She will be sincerely missed by her colleagues in the City of Houston.”

The district attorney’s office is currently investigating the incident to determine if any charges will be filed. Additionally, authorities are looking into whether the rainy weather on Friday played a role in the crash.
