Initial investigations revealed that the driver of a Toyota, identified as Arturo Luis Garcia, was traveling northbound on Highway 65, south of Sherwood Avenue, when he mistakenly entered the southbound lanes in an attempt to pass other vehicles. Tragically, this led to a collision with an oncoming car.

Garcia, who had only joined the CDCR as a corrections officer in November 2023, began his duties at the Salinas Valley State Prison in March 2024.
