Calgary Realtor Kerry Stevenson Killed in Glider Accident

Calgary Realtor and avid gliding enthusiast Kerry Stevenson tragically lost his life in a glider accident south of the city. The Cu Nim Gliding Club confirmed that the 65-year-old past president was competing in a national soaring competition near Okotoks when the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon. Described as a mentor to others in the sport, Stevenson had a profound impact on the flying careers of many Cu Nim glider pilots over the years.

A Passion for Gliding

“Kerry helped shape the flying careers of many Cu Nim glider pilots over many years as a reliable and supportive flight instructor, and shaped the club as a long-serving past president (as recently as 2019),” the club said in a statement. Stevenson was known for his love of the sport as a cross-country pilot, exploring the Cowley Glider Strip during the Alberta Soaring Council’s Cowley Camps, and participating in soaring competitions held in Alberta.

Aside from his dedication to gliding, Stevenson was also a grandfather, motorcyclist, dog-lover, and successful realtor, according to his colleagues. His presence will be deeply missed by members of the gliding club and the various communities where he made significant contributions.

Investigation Underway

The fatality is currently under investigation by the federal Transportation Safety Board. Alberta Soaring Council president Jason Acker revealed that Stevenson appeared to have attempted a parachute escape during a malfunction of his glider, which was described as a newer model. His body was discovered approximately 100 metres from the crashed glider near Highway 7, close to the Cu Nim Glider Club air strip west of Okotoks.

RELATED STORIES

In light of Stevenson’s untimely passing, participants in the national soaring competition chose to conclude the event two days ahead of schedule. This tragic incident is not the first time that Cu Nim club members have faced the loss of fellow gliders in accidents.

Past Tragedies

In a separate incident, experienced glider pilot Allan Wood, 68, and Adam Leinweber, 18, lost their lives during a training flight at the club on July 26, 2019, when their glider collided with a small motorized aircraft. A subsequent TSB investigation report revealed that a collision avoidance device, known as a PowerFLARM, was not functioning in the Cessna 182N, resulting in the fatal collision with the glider at an elevation of about 700 metres above the ground.

The glider had been released from its tow line 34 seconds prior to the crash, causing the Schleicher ASK 21 glider to plummet to the earth after its vertical and horizontal stabilizers were sheared off.
