Deputy Jonathan Dominka received a SAVES presentation after surviving being stabbed with a 6-inch-long screwdriver during an encounter with a Mount Clemens man experiencing a mental health incident. Fortunately, the screwdriver did not penetrate Dominka’s Armor Express Body Armor. The incident took place this past February when Deputy Dominka was dispatched to serve a court-ordered emergency psychiatric evaluation on a resident of Mount Clemens. The individual was described as highly irritated and combative, making the situation tense from the start.

As Deputy Dominka attempted to carry out his duties, the man became aggressive and lunged towards him, jabbing him in the left abdomen area with a 6-inch-long screwdriver. Thankfully, the screwdriver did not penetrate through Dominka’s Armor Express Body Armor wraparound vest, saving his life.

Recognition for Bravery

During the recognition ceremony, Brian Murphy, a retired lieutenant from the Oak Creek Police Department in Wisconsin and now a representative of Armor Express, was present. Paul Riddell, president of On Duty Gear, the supplier of Armor Express, also attended the ceremony.

Murphy shared his own experience of surviving a violent attack, where he was shot multiple times but saved by his body armor. His bravery and commitment to duty were recognized by then-Vice President Joseph Biden, who awarded him the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor in 2015.

The ceremony highlighted the dangers that law enforcement officers face every day and the importance of having proper protective gear to ensure their safety.
