SALISBURY — A man was taken into custody by law enforcement officers after being caught driving at speeds exceeding 150 mph on Interstate 85.

The high-speed chase unfolded late on Monday evening near the Julian Road exit, according to Captain Mark McDaniel, the public information officer for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. A deputy on patrol observed a dark-colored Ford Mustang travelling at over 100 mph and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The driver of the Mustang, later identified as 21-year-old John Cameron Curry, refused to comply and accelerated to over 150 mph in a bid to evade capture.

The pursuit continued southbound along Interstate 85 until the Mustang exited onto Webb Road, where it eventually came to a halt in a parking lot situated within the 300 block of Webb Road, McDaniel disclosed.

Subsequently, Curry was apprehended and charged with felony flee to elude and misdemeanor aggressive driving. Records from the sheriff’s office indicated that Curry was taken into custody at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday and later remanded to the Rowan County Detention Center in lieu of a $20,000 bond.
