The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) has released findings on a wrong-way crash on I-25. The incident occurred early Sunday morning when a car was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes, resulting in a head-on collision. Good Samaritan Joel Montalvo, 64, was tragically killed while trying to help. The crash also claimed the lives of Darlisse Rivera-Albino, 37, and Heidi Jackson, 46. CSPD is investigating the crash, with drugs and alcohol as potential factors. This marks the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs this year. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) has revealed new details following a devastating wrong-way crash on Interstate 25 over the weekend.
The Tragic Incident
Early on Sunday morning, at approximately 4:45 a.m., CSPD received a distressing call about a vehicle travelling in the wrong direction on the northbound lanes of I-25. Moments later, a horrific head-on collision occurred as a result of this dangerous driving.
Following the crash, a Good Samaritan, later identified as 64-year-old Joel Montalvo, bravely stepped out of his vehicle to assist. Tragically, as Montalvo attempted to cross the interstate to lend a helping hand, he was struck by another vehicle travelling northbound.
The Aftermath
Upon arrival at the scene, CSPD discovered that one of the drivers and Montalvo had succumbed to their injuries. The second driver was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately also passed away due to the severity of their injuries.

On Tuesday, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office officially identified the three individuals who tragically lost their lives in the crash. The wrong-way driver was identified as 37-year-old Darlisse Rivera-Albino, while the other driver was identified as 46-year-old Heidi Jackson.
Investigation Ongoing
CSPD is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities are considering the possibility of drugs and/or alcohol playing a role in this devastating incident.
According to CSPD, this recent collision marks the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd traffic-related fatalities in Colorado Springs this year. Comparatively, at this time last year, there were 19 traffic fatalities reported.
