MINNEAPOLIS — A Minneapolis police officer was tragically killed while responding to a shooting call in a south Minneapolis neighborhood. The officer, identified as Jamal Mitchell, was providing medical attention to a man who shot him in what authorities are calling an ambush. The suspected gunman and another person were also killed in the incident, which left a third person critically injured. Jamal Mitchell, a dedicated father and soon-to-be husband, tragically lost his life while serving and protecting the people of Minneapolis. His colleagues and loved ones gathered outside Hennepin County Medical Center to pay their respects as Mitchell was pronounced dead.

Mitchell’s selfless acts of heroism were not unknown to his colleagues. Last year, on his third day on the job, Mitchell and another officer bravely rescued an elderly couple from a burning house. Their quick thinking and bravery saved the couple’s lives and prevented a more tragic outcome.
