Attempted Murder Defendant Takes Plea Deal in Baltimore City

A 32-year-old man, Jamal Banks, who was facing multiple charges related to attempted murder, recently decided to take a plea deal in Baltimore City. The case, which was scheduled to go to trial, took a different turn on May 24 when Banks appeared before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Yolanda A. Tanner.

The Charges

Banks was initially charged with three counts of attempted first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, firearm use in a felony violent crime, wearing and carrying a handgun, carrying and transporting a handgun, and firing a firearm. However, during the court proceedings, he pleaded guilty to three counts of reckless endangerment, as well as single counts of having a handgun on his person and firing a gun in Baltimore City.

The Incident

According to documents from the District Court of Maryland, the incident took place on August 27, 2023. A Baltimore Police Department officer responded to a call at Mercy Hospital Emergency Room, where a woman had been brought in with a gunshot wound. The woman, who had been shot on the 100 block of Saint Paul Street, was unable to identify the shooter. Through further investigation, Banks was identified as the suspect by detectives who were working on multiple cases, including one where Banks himself was a victim.

Sentencing

While Banks has pleaded guilty to several charges, the sentencing has not been scheduled yet. The court will determine the appropriate punishment for his actions in due course.
