On a typical Thursday morning, a shocking incident unfolded near the 1600 block of Ocean Front Walk in Santa Monica. A 73-year-old woman, going about her peaceful morning walk, was suddenly attacked by a male suspect. This suspect, identified as 39-year-old Jalan Rodger James, who is currently experiencing homelessness, was swiftly apprehended by the authorities for battery on an elder and resisting arrest.
The Unprovoked Attack
The victim recounted the terrifying ordeal to the officers, stating that James approached her in a state of agitation, shouting incomprehensibly. Despite her efforts to avoid any confrontation, he callously pushed her to the ground, causing her to sustain a back injury and painful abrasions on her hands as she tried to break her fall.
Rapid Police Response
Following the initial assault, a second distress call was made, reporting that James was attempting to physically harm other passersby in the vicinity. Thanks to the quick actions of the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) Drone Operator, James was located near 2nd and Colorado within minutes. Officers promptly arrived at the scene and took him into custody.
Legal Proceedings
Upon gathering video evidence and witness testimonies, detectives presented the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office. James now faces serious charges including felony battery with serious bodily injury, felony elder/adult abuse, and two counts of resisting an executive officer.
