Glendale police have recently released body camera footage that sheds light on a dramatic incident that took place on April 28 at a store near 51st and Glendale avenues. The footage shows a suspected shoplifter, identified as 26-year-old Gohan Kancab, allegedly pointing a fake handgun, which was actually a lighter, at officers before being shot by the police.
Details of the Incident
According to reports, Kancab was initially spotted shoplifting at the store before leaving and returning with what appeared to be a handgun. An unidentified 911 caller alerted the authorities, stating, “He was just in our store. Stole some stuff. Ran out. He’s sitting by our light pole smoking something.”
Responding officers quickly located Kancab at a nearby bus stop, where he immediately pulled out the alleged handgun from his backpack and aimed it at the officer. The body camera footage captures the tense moment when police commanded Kancab to show his hands, but he refused, leading to an officer firing three shots at him.
Backup officers arrived at the scene and provided immediate first aid to Kancab, who had been struck on his left arm. Despite his injuries, Kancab was transported to a hospital and survived.

Confession and Charges
While in custody, Kancab reportedly confessed to the police that the gun he displayed was a lighter. He also admitted to shoplifting items and smoking fentanyl before the shooting. The handgun lighter he used bore a striking resemblance to a real-life handgun, the Colt Defender.
As a result of the incident, Kancab has been charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault using a deadly weapon by Glendale police. The officer-involved shooting is currently under investigation, with both internal and criminal reviews being conducted. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office will also be involved in double-checking the case.
