San Diego Man Arrested in Child Exploitation Case in Fort Lauderdale

A San Diego man, Eric Jacob Layton, was arrested and booked into the Broward Main Jail in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Thursday. He is set to appear before U.S. District Judge David S. Leibowitz at 10 a.m. Friday for a status conference regarding a child exploitation case.

Investigation Details

The investigation into Layton began in April 2023 after police received a tip that a 15-year-old Plantation boy was being solicited online via social media and voice calls to produce child sexual abuse material. According to the FBI, Layton, claiming to be a writer for a boxing publication, reached out to the boy’s mother via Instagram, seeking an interview with her son.

Alarming Interactions

Layton’s interactions with the boy and his family raised red flags as he asked inappropriate questions about the boy’s physical development, including inquiries about masturbation, testosterone production, and genitalia size. Despite persistent requests, the boy’s father did not comply with Layton’s demands for explicit photos.

Previous Criminal History

Layton, previously known by the name Eric Leighton Abrams, has a history of criminal activities involving children. In 1999, he was sentenced to two years in prison for false imprisonment and annoying or molesting a child after luring a 13-year-old boy to his house under false pretenses.
