The tragic incident took place on Tuesday evening as Asiayei was returning from work in his Toyota Sienna vehicle. The victim, who hailed from Bobougbene community in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, had a passenger in the front seat at the time of the shooting.
An eyewitness, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, recounted that the Operation Doo Akpo patrol stopped Asiayei and demanded N200 as their usual collection fee from motorists. When the victim explained that he did not have the money, the policeman suddenly cocked his gun and fired at him at point-blank range.
The shocking incident unfolded in plain view as the in-law of the deceased, known as Zaiky, discovered the car and the lifeless body of Asiayei. The crowd immediately raised an alarm, and one of the bystanders pointed out the officer responsible for the fatal shooting.
Although the policeman managed to flee the scene in the patrol van, members of the public had already captured his image on camera. The police swiftly transported Asiayei’s body to the Government House Hospital in Yenagoa and later to the Federal Medical Centre mortuary.
Following the tragedy, Asiayei’s family is seeking justice and calling on Governor Douye Diri, the Inspector General of Police, and the Ijaw Youth Council to take action against police brutality in the state.
In response to inquiries, the Police Public Relations Officer of Bayelsa State, Musa Mohammed, acknowledged the incident and assured that the perpetrator had been identified and detained.
