The suspect in the fatal road rage shooting of a 65-year-old family driver faced online inquest proceedings on Friday, May 31, as confirmed by Makati City Police. Gerrard Raymund Yu, the identified suspect, met with prosecutors, investigators, and complainants at the Makati City Police headquarters. After the proceedings, Yu urged the public not to judge him, claiming he is a “good person.” Yu was arrested for shooting victim Aniceto Mateo in a road rage incident along Edsa Ayala tunnel in Makati on May 28. Interior and Local Government Secretary Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos, Jr., along with other officials, presented Yu to the media, stating that the suspect tested positive for gunpowder nitrate and faces multiple charges, including murder.

The Incident in Makati City

The suspect in the fatal road rage shooting of a 65-year-old family driver faced online inquest proceedings on Friday, May 31, at the Makati City Police headquarters. Gerrard Raymund Yu, the suspect, appeared before the Makati City prosecutor, investigators, and the complainants inside a closed-door conference room.

After the inquest proceedings, Yu made a plea to the public, asking them not to judge him as he believes he is a “good person.” As he was escorted out of the conference room, he said, “I am a good person, not a bad one. I am appealing to everyone to please do not judge me.”

On May 29, Yu was apprehended by the police for shooting the victim, Aniceto Mateo, in a road rage incident along the southbound lane of the Edsa Ayala tunnel in Makati City on May 28.

Police Investigation and Findings

Interior and Local Government Secretary Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos, Jr., along with Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil and National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Chief Maj. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez, Jr., presented the suspect to the media.

Abalos stated, “The seized firearms were brought to the PNP Forensics Group for ballistic examination. The suspect underwent a paraffin test, which showed a positive result for gunpowder nitrate. Ballistic examination revealed that one of the seized firearms matched the recovered fired cartridge case from the suspect’s firearm.”

Marbil confirmed that witnesses positively identified Yu as the perpetrator of the shooting. Additionally, the two firearms recovered from Yu were found to be registered, but he did not possess a Permit to Carry Firearms Outside Residence (PTCFOR).

Legal Consequences

Yu is now facing charges for murder, as well as violations of the Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition and the Land Transportation and Traffic Code for the illegal use of a license plate.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the dangers of road rage and the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to ensure that justice is served for the victim and his family.
