The Chandigarh police have filed a case against a Sangrur resident for allegedly circulating a fake job advertisement for a position at the State Election Commission (SEC). The accused, identified as Akhil Sharma, is known for posting job requirements under different names. The incident was brought to light when an accountant at the commission received a misleading WhatsApp message about a data entry job offering a salary of ₹28,800, free meals, and weekends off. An investigation revealed that the mobile number linked to the advertisement belonged to Sharma. A case has been registered under Sections 420 and 511 of the Indian Penal Code, as well as Section 66-D of the Information Technology Act. Police are now trying to locate Sharma and any other accomplices involved in the fraudulent activity.

An Alleged Fraudulent Job Advertisement in Sangrur
In a recent development in Sangrur, a resident named Akhil Sharma has been booked by the local police for circulating a fake job advertisement for a position at the State Election Commission (SEC). The incident has caused quite a stir in the local community, shedding light on the prevalence of fraudulent activities in the job market.
Discovery of the Fraudulent Advertisement
The fraudulent job advertisement came to light when Dinesh Gupta, an accountant at the commission, received a WhatsApp message from a friend regarding a job opening for a data entry operator at the SEC. The message falsely claimed that the position offered a lucrative salary of ₹28,800, along with additional perks such as free meals and weekends off. Gupta, sensing something amiss, promptly reported the matter to the officer on special duty (OSD).
Investigation and Unravelling of the Scheme
The OSD took immediate action and contacted the number provided in the advertisement, engaging in a conversation with an individual who identified himself as Akhil Sharma, an assistant sales manager at Hindustan Unilever, Patiala. However, Sharma vehemently denied any involvement in the fraudulent job advertisement. Further investigation revealed that the mobile number was linked to a WhatsApp account named “Career jobs,” which responded with an automated message upon contact.
Through additional scrutiny using Truecaller, the number was identified as “Career Concepts,” further confirming the suspicious nature of the advertisement. Additionally, an HDFC employee named Pankaj Rathore, who had initially forwarded the message, confirmed that the number belonged to Sharma, who was known for posting job requirements under various aliases.

Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation
Upon the complaint filed by the SEC, a case has been registered at the Sector 17 police station under Sections 420 and 511 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as well as Section 66-D of the Information Technology (IT) Act. The police have initiated an investigation to apprehend Sharma and any potential associates involved in the fraudulent scheme, highlighting the seriousness of the matter.
The incident serves as a cautionary tale for job seekers to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of job postings before applying. It also underscores the importance of stringent measures to combat fraudulent activities in the job market, ensuring the protection of individuals from falling victim to such scams.
