Two people were killed in Assam’s Hailakandi district due to floods caused by heavy rainfall from Cyclone Remal, bringing the death toll to 8. The floods have affected over 1,98,856 people across nine districts, with Cachar being the most affected, impacting more than 1,02,246 individuals. A 70-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man lost their lives in separate incidents in Hailakandi. Assam’s water resources minister, Pijush Hazarika, visited the affected areas to assess the situation and stated that the state has received over 300mm of rainfall in the last two days. The flood-like situation has also resulted in train delays and cancellations.

Two Killed in Assam Due to Floods Caused by Heavy Rain Amid Cyclone Remal Aftermath
Tragedy struck the state of Assam once again as two individuals lost their lives in Hailakandi district due to floods triggered by heavy rainfall following Cyclone Remal. This unfortunate incident has brought the total death toll to 8, leaving many families devastated.
Extent of the Disaster
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that a staggering 1,98,856 people across nine districts have been affected by the floods. The districts of Hailakandi, Hojai, Golaghat, Nagaon, Karimganj, Cachar, Karbi Anglong West, Karbi Anglong, and Dima-Hasao have all felt the impact of this natural disaster.
Among these districts, Cachar emerged as the most severely affected, with over 1,02,246 individuals grappling with the aftermath of the flooding. The situation has been dire, with communities struggling to cope with the overwhelming challenges posed by the rising waters.
Loss of Lives
In Hailakandi, a 70-year-old woman named Ajibun Nessa and a 30-year-old man named Abul Hussain tragically lost their lives in separate incidents. Ajibun Nessa heroically attempted to rescue her 6-year-old grandson who had fallen into the floodwaters but, unfortunately, she succumbed to the forces of nature in the process.

On the other hand, Abul Hussain, a fisherman from the Lalabazar area, met a similar fate while he was fishing by the river. His sudden fall into the water resulted in a tragic end, leaving his loved ones in mourning.
Government Response
Assam’s Minister for Water Resources, Pijush Hazarika, wasted no time in visiting the affected districts of Barak Valley to assess the situation. He assured the public that efforts are underway to repair the damaged sluice gates and mitigate the impact of the floods on the community.
With over 300mm of rainfall recorded in the past two days and the additional burden of heavy rainfall in neighbouring states like Manipur and Mizoram, the challenges have been immense. However, Hazarika emphasized that the state is well-prepared to handle the crisis, with all departments working tirelessly to provide relief and support to those in need.
Transport Disruptions
Aside from the human toll, the flood-like conditions have also disrupted transportation services in the region. Several trains, including the Guwahati-Silchar Express, have been cancelled or rescheduled due to damaged tracks, causing inconvenience to commuters and travellers.
As the state grapples with the aftermath of Cyclone Remal and the subsequent floods, the people of Assam are urged to remain vigilant and heed the advice of authorities to ensure their safety and well-being during this challenging period.
