Man Arrested for Attacking Elderly Woman in Santa Monica

An unsettling incident unfolded in Santa Monica as a suspect was arrested for allegedly attacking a 73-year-old woman while she was taking a morning walk near the 1600 block of Ocean Front Walk. The suspect, identified as Jalan Rodger James, 39, by the Santa Monica Police Department, approached the woman while yelling incoherently. Despite her attempts to avoid him, James shoved her to the ground, leaving her with injuries to her hands and a back injury.

Suspect’s Aggressive Behavior

Following the attack on the elderly woman, a second call to police reported that the suspect, James, was also seen attempting to punch bystanders in the area. Officers and a police drone unit swiftly responded to the scene, spotting James walking near 2nd Street and Colorado Avenue.

Charges and Additional Cases

James was arrested on several charges, including felony battery with serious bodily injury, felony elder/adult abuse, and two counts of resisting an executive officer. Authorities revealed that James is believed to be homeless and is facing additional charges in another Santa Monica assault case currently under review by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
