The disturbing attack, which took place in the Canarsie neighborhood of Brooklyn, was captured on video by the Flatbush Shomrim Safety Patrol. The footage shows the driver, identified as 58-year-old Asghar Ali, intentionally driving onto the sidewalk and targeting Orthodox Jews outside the Yeshiva.
According to a report by the New York Post, Ali, a Pakistani immigrant and cab driver with a history of mental illness, is currently under investigation by the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force. He faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, attempted assault, and hate crimes charges.
The attack unfolded as Ali, driving a white Crown Victoria, turned onto East 55th Street and aimed his vehicle at students in Orthodox attire. He circled the block and returned to target more students and a rabbi, all while shouting hateful slurs.
Rabbi Twersky, who witnessed the chaos, described the terrifying moment when the driver attempted to strike one of the boys before driving towards a group of students gathered on the street. Thankfully, all the victims managed to escape unharmed by seeking refuge inside the Yeshiva.
The quick response of the Shomrim Safety Patrol led to the apprehension of Ali at a nearby Dunkin’ Donuts. The patrol was able to retrieve video footage and identify the attacker’s vehicle, leading to his swift arrest.
Ali, who has been living in the US for over two decades, has a history of prior arrests, including one for false personation in 1998. He was taken into custody and transferred to Coney Island Hospital for evaluation as an emotionally disturbed person.
Bob Moskowitz, executive coordinator of the safety patrol, expressed relief at the swift apprehension of Ali, stating, “This is not somebody that we want driving around the streets, especially with this anti-Semitic, anti-Jewish climate that’s out there. We were glad to be able to put this to rest.”
