Officials in Cowlitz County, Washington, have identified a body found in a river as Pierre Pearson, originally from Georgia. Pearson, who moved to the west coast in April 2021, was discovered by fishermen in the Columbia River in June 2022. Due to the body’s state of decomposition, identification using traditional methods was impossible. However, with the help of Othram, a DNA lab in Texas, a match was found through dental records. The sheriff’s office has contacted Pearson’s family and is working to return his remains. There is no suspicion of foul play in Pearson’s death, and the case will be closed.

A body discovered in a river in Cowlitz County, Washington, two years ago has been identified as that of Pierre Pearson, a man originally from Georgia. Pearson had not been in contact with his family since April 2021 when he relocated to the West Coast.
The identification of Pearson’s body came about a year after two fishermen on the Columbia River in Washington spotted a heavily decomposed body in the water. The Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office initially struggled to identify the body using traditional methods such as facial recognition or fingerprints.
Subsequently, the remains were sent to Othram, a private DNA lab in Texas, for further testing. Othram was able to find a potential family match for Pearson and contacted his stepmother and father to obtain dental records that ultimately confirmed his identity.
With Pearson’s identity confirmed, officials are now in the process of handing over his remains to his family. The sheriff’s office has stated that there is no evidence to suggest that Pearson’s death was the result of a crime, and as a result, the investigation will be closed.
