Over the weekend, residents in the peaceful neighbourhood of the 1600 block of North 19th Street in Grand Junction, Colorado, were startled by a brazen auto theft incident that unfolded right in front of their eyes.
Neighbour’s Quick Thinking
The incident occurred on Sunday, May 26th, at approximately 1:25 p.m. when a vigilant neighbour spotted two suspicious males attempting to break into parked vehicles. Without wasting a moment, the neighbour alerted the Grand Junction Police Department (GJPD) about the unfolding situation.
Stolen Dodge Charger
The two suspects managed to successfully steal a parked Dodge Charger that had its engine running with the keys conveniently left in the ignition. After driving off in the stolen vehicle, the suspects later returned to the area and attempted to break into a nearby residence, escalating the situation.
Confrontation with Homeowner
The situation took a dramatic turn when the homeowner confronted the suspects as they tried to force their way into the residence. The suspects, caught off guard, quickly fled the scene with the homeowner hot on their trail.

Police Pursuit
Officers with the GJPD sprang into action and attempted to stop the stolen Dodge Charger, but the suspects managed to evade the authorities. The chase led to an apartment complex in the 2900 block of Orchard Avenue, where the suspects abandoned the vehicle, which was emitting smoke due to the intense situation.
Arrest and Charges
Thanks to the swift response of the GJPD and the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), the two suspects, identified as Marcelino Salazar, 19, and Luis Mancilla-Aceves, 19, were apprehended and taken into custody. They now face a slew of charges, including auto theft, burglary, eluding, first-degree criminal trespass to a vehicle, and other related offences.
