However, lawyer Gilles Moreu confirmed to The Associated Press that the court’s decision did not favour Maradona’s heirs.
The auction of the Golden Ball trophy is scheduled to take place next Thursday in Paris, conducted by the Aguttes auction house. This prestigious trophy had been missing for many years after it disappeared under mysterious circumstances, only to resurface recently. Maradona’s heirs claim that the trophy was stolen and argue that the current owner has no right to sell it. On the other hand, Aguttes stated that the trophy reappeared in 2016 as part of a private collection acquired at an auction in Paris.

According to Moreu, the president of the Nanterre court near Paris determined that the current owner of the trophy, identified as Mr. Benchaieb, should be considered to have acted in good faith. Benchaieb and Aguttes maintain that when he purchased the trophy years ago, he was unaware that it had been stolen.
Maradona was presented with the Golden Ball in 1986 at a ceremony held at the Lido cabaret on the Champs-Élysées. However, the trophy subsequently went missing, leading to various speculations. Some believe it was lost during a poker game or sold to settle debts, while others claim that Maradona stored it in a safe at a Naples bank that was later robbed by local criminals in 1989 during his time playing in the Italian league. Nonetheless, Maradona’s heirs are convinced that the trophy was stolen from the bank.
