Ottawa County Suspect Charged in Domestic Assault Incident
Last week, a disturbing incident unfolded in Robinson Township, Ottawa County, leaving a woman shot and a man stabbed. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) reported that the incident took place near 96th Avenue and Winans Street on May 23.
According to authorities, a 35-year-old man allegedly shot at his girlfriend while their five children were inside the home. The situation escalated when one of the children, a brave 16-year-old boy, defended his mother with a knife. The man then reportedly shot at the teen but fortunately missed.
The woman sustained leg and head injuries but is expected to recover fully. She has already been discharged from the hospital. The man, who suffered a knife wound in the neck, is also expected to survive.
Suspect identified and Charged
The suspect in this harrowing incident has been identified as Vaughn Smith. On Wednesday, he was formally charged with two counts of assault with murderous intent, three counts of felony firearms, and one count of illegally possessing a firearm. Smith has been remanded on a $5 million cash/surety bond.
