The “good Samaritan” who was tragically killed while trying to assist drivers in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 25 has been identified as 64-year-old Joel Montalvo by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office. The incident occurred when a vehicle traveling south in the northbound lanes collided with another car near Martin Luther King Jr. Bypass. Montalvo was struck while crossing the street to help the drivers involved in the initial head-on collision. Sadly, Montalvo and one of the drivers were pronounced dead at the scene, while the wrong-way driver succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. El Paso County Coroner Identifies Good Samaritan Killed in Wrong-Way Crash

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office has identified the “good Samaritan,” who tragically lost his life while trying to assist two drivers involved in an early morning wrong-way crash along Interstate 25 on Sunday. The victim has been named as 64-year-old Joel Montalvo, according to spokesperson Sandy Wilson.

Details of the Incident

Reports from the Gazette indicate that a vehicle was travelling south in the northbound lanes of the interstate near Martin Luther King Jr. Bypass when it collided with another car. Montalvo, in an act of kindness, exited his own vehicle to help the drivers of the two cars that had crashed head-on.

Unfortunately, as Montalvo attempted to cross the street, he was struck by another vehicle travelling northbound. The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) Lieutenant confirmed that Montalvo and one of the drivers involved in the initial collision were pronounced dead at the scene. The wrong-way driver was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to their injuries.

Ongoing Investigation

The investigation into the cause of the crash is still ongoing, with authorities awaiting lab results from the coroner’s office to shed more light on the circumstances leading to the tragic incident. The identities of the two drivers involved in the head-on collision have yet to be disclosed by the coroner’s office.
