The Victims

The victims of this heinous act of violence included Dinesh’s 55-year-old mother Siyabai, his 23-year-old wife Varsha, his 35-year-old brother Shravan Kumar, and Shravan’s 30-year-old wife Baratobai. In addition, his 16-year-old sister Parvati, his five-year-old nephew Krishna, and his nieces Sewnti, aged 4, and Deepa, aged 1, were also brutally murdered with an axe.

A Narrow Escape

Amidst the chaos, a 10-year-old neighbour narrowly escaped a similar fate, thanks to the timely intervention of his grandmother. The screams from the house alerted neighbours, who rushed in and forced Dinesh to flee the scene. His lifeless body was later discovered hanging from a tree, a hundred metres away from the house.

The Motive Unravelled

As the community grappled with the shock of the incident, questions loomed about the motive behind Dinesh’s violent rampage. The police, who arrived at the scene to investigate, revealed that Dinesh was believed to be suffering from schizophrenia, a severe mental disorder that may have driven him to commit the gruesome act.

An Official Statement

Anil Singh Kushwaha, Inspector General of Police (IG) Jabalpur Zone, shed light on the situation, stating, “After consultation with doctors, we came to know that a person suffering from the disease may attack people. Later, he realised that he committed a mistake and died by suicide. So, prima facie, it seems that this may have happened in this case as well, he must have realised his mistake and committed suicide.”

Government Response

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed his condolences over the tragedy and promised a thorough investigation into the matter. “I have asked one of our ministers to visit Chhindwara and meet with the family members of the victims. We will do everything possible to provide support and justice to the affected,” CM Yadav affirmed.
