The Fight Against Human Trafficking in Tucson, Arizona
Human trafficking is a heinous crime that often goes unnoticed, hidden in the shadows of society. Sadly, it is a prevalent issue in Pima County, Arizona, where vulnerable individuals are targeted and exploited by traffickers.
New Funding to Combat Human Trafficking
In a bid to tackle this pressing issue, the Arizona Department of Public Safety has allocated $500,000 to support the Tucson Police Department’s Sex Offender Registration and Trafficking Unit (SORT) in their efforts to combat human trafficking.
Sergeant Lorence Jove Jr. of the Tucson Police Department expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “It truly is a horrific crime that just completely takes away people’s lives.”
The Harsh Reality of Human Trafficking
Human trafficking, whether for labor or sex, affects millions of individuals nationwide each year. According to recent data from Arizona State University School of Social Work, between January 2021 and May 2023, 309 children were identified as suspected or confirmed victims of sex trafficking, with 66 cases reported in Pima County.

Victims of human trafficking often face insurmountable challenges, including fear of violence, threats to loved ones, and psychological manipulation by their traffickers. The repercussions of trafficking can have long-lasting effects on individuals, leading to issues such as drug addiction, unwanted pregnancies, and sexually transmitted diseases.
Protecting the Most Vulnerable
Sergeant Jove highlighted that women and children are often the primary targets of traffickers, preying on their vulnerabilities and unmet needs. He emphasised the importance of vigilance in protecting children from falling victim to traffickers, who are adept at identifying and exploiting their vulnerabilities.
The new funding allocated to SORT will be used to enhance their capabilities through training and equipment upgrades, including night vision gear, charging stations, and specialised vehicles. These resources will enable law enforcement to conduct undercover operations, transport survivors to safety, and conduct interviews in a secure environment.
Collaborative Efforts to Combat Trafficking
Katlyn Monje, Director of the Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault, commended the partnership with the Tucson Police Department in addressing human trafficking. She emphasised the value of dedicated funding for education, training, and prevention efforts in combating trafficking.
Sergeant Jove reiterated that the funding would not only benefit the Tucson Police Department but also support other agencies in Pima County in their fight against human trafficking. The specialised equipment provided through this funding will enhance the collective efforts to combat trafficking in the region.
