Food Poisoning Outbreak at SPC Institute of Nursing Education and Research, Salem

In a concerning turn of events, a total of 82 nursing students at the SPC Institute of Nursing Education and Research in Kuppanur, Salem district, Tamil Nadu, were hospitalized due to food poisoning. The incident occurred after the students consumed food at their private college hostel.

The students, who were looking forward to a regular meal at the hostel, soon found themselves in distress as 20 of them fell ill on Sunday. They were immediately taken to a hospital managed by the college for initial treatment and observation. However, as their condition worsened, health department officials intervened.

Upon inspection on Monday, the Health Department officials decided to transfer all 82 affected students to the Salem Government hospital for further treatment. The majority of the students were experiencing symptoms of dehydration, while some reported stomachaches, vomiting, and diarrhea. Thankfully, all students are now in stable condition.

In response to the incident, the Food Safety department has collected samples of food and water from the hostel kitchen for testing. Both the Food Safety Department and Health Department have issued notices to the college, requesting an explanation for the unfortunate turn of events. As a precautionary measure, the hostel canteen has been temporarily closed.

Tragic Loss in Kerala Due to Food Poisoning

Meanwhile, in the Thrissur district of Kerala, a devastating incident of food poisoning has left the community in mourning. A total of 178 individuals fell ill after consuming Biryani from a local restaurant in the Perinjanam area, with one woman tragically losing her life.

The deceased, identified as Uzaiba (56) from Kutilakkadav, was admitted to Thrissur Medical College after experiencing severe stomach ache and vomiting. Despite receiving treatment alongside two relatives, her condition deteriorated rapidly.

Following the outbreak, the restaurant responsible for serving the contaminated food has been shut down. The 178 affected individuals sought medical attention for symptoms such as diarrhoea and vomiting, highlighting the severity of the situation.
