South Hadley Man Survives Grizzly Bear Attack in Grand Teton National Park
In a harrowing encounter at the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, South Hadley resident Shayne Patrick Burke found himself face-to-face with a grizzly bear protecting her cub. The incident, which took place last week, left Burke with serious injuries but ultimately ended with him surviving the attack.
The Encounter
Shayne Patrick Burke, an Army Veteran and photographer, had ventured into the National Park with the intention of capturing photos of a Great Grey Owl that was known to frequent the area. Little did he know that his peaceful photography expedition would turn into a life-threatening situation.
As Burke was making his way back through the forest after an extended period of time, he suddenly came upon a bear cub running up a hill just 50 yards away. Before he could react, the mother bear charged at him, leaving him with no choice but to defend himself.
The Attack
Despite his efforts to use bear spray as a deterrent, Burke was quickly overtaken by the bear. He bravely tried to protect himself by laying on his belly and covering his vital organs. The bear inflicted bites and slashes on his back, right shoulder, and legs before Burke managed to use the bear spray effectively, causing the bear to retreat momentarily.

After realizing the severity of his injuries, Burke contacted his wife to inform her of the attack and called 911 for assistance. Recovery and Future
Despite the odds stacked against him, rescue crews were able to locate Burke and transport him to a hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries. Fortunately, doctors expect him to make a full recovery from the grizzly bear attack.
