Tragic Deaths in the Midst of Cyclone Remal

Four individuals, including two women, met a tragic end after being electrocuted in different parts of Dhaka amidst strong winds and rain brought on by Cyclone Remal last night. The victims were identified as Rakib, a 25-year-old rickshaw puller; Mariyam Begum, a 45-year-old garment worker; Liza Akter, a 16-year-old factory worker; and Al Amin, a 17-year-old sawmill worker.

Details of the Incident

The unfortunate incidents took place between 9:00 pm yesterday and 1:30 am today. Relatives, colleagues, and neighbors rushed the victims to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where they were pronounced dead by doctors, as confirmed by Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost. The bodies were then sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy.

Circumstances of the Deaths

According to police reports and rescuers, Rakib was electrocuted while trying to remove the charger from his battery-operated rickshaw in a garage in the Riazbagh area of Khilgaon, which was experiencing waterlogging due to the heavy rain.

Mariyam Begum suffered electrocution in knee-deep water on a road in Khilgaon’s Sipahibahg area around 9:30 pm. The water came into contact with a live electric wire, leading to the tragic incident.

Liza Akter’s brother, Rakib, mentioned that his sister was electrocuted when she touched a tin-fence in their neighborhood around 9:00 pm. He suspected that the fence had come into contact with a live wire, resulting in the fatal accident.

Al Amin was electrocuted while walking through water on his way to the sawmill from his house around 11:30 pm, according to his co-worker Jahid Hasan.
