Wilson police in the UK have shared more information about a tragic officer-involved shooting that took place over the weekend. Authorities responded to a shots fired call on Hood Street early Sunday morning. Upon arrival, officers found two individuals, one of whom was identified as Ed Edwards, III, 48, of Wilson. As officers questioned Edwards, he allegedly turned towards them with a firearm and opened fire. In response, the officers discharged their weapons, fatally injuring Edwards. The officers involved, Officer H.M. Little and Officer R.R. Celaya, are currently on administrative leave while the SBI conducts an investigation into the incident.

The incident began when officers received a call reporting shots fired in the 900 block of Hood Street. Responding quickly, officers arrived at the scene at 12:30 am to investigate the situation.
Encounter with Suspect
Upon arrival, officers spoke with a witness who had heard gunshots behind her home. While conducting a search of the area, officers encountered two individuals, one of whom was identified as Ed Edwards, III, a 48-year-old resident of Wilson.
Escalation of Events
As officers questioned Edwards, he began to walk away from them. However, the situation took a tragic turn when Edwards turned towards one of the officers, brandishing a gun and firing a shot. In response, the officers returned fire, striking Edwards.

Efforts to Save a Life
Despite the officers’ best efforts to render aid, Edwards succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Emergency responders arrived shortly afterward and pronounced him dead.
Identification of Involved Officers
The officers involved in the shooting have been identified as Officer H.M. Little and Officer R.R. Celaya. Officer Little, who joined the police department in 2022, is assigned to the west district as a patrol officer. Officer Celaya, also a 2022 recruit, is assigned to the north district in a similar capacity.
