In response to the emergency situation, the district administration swiftly opened five additional relief camps to provide shelter to those affected by the storm. These camps, located in various villages across the district, offered refuge to hundreds of families who had to evacuate their homes due to the inclement weather.

Impact on Infrastructure

The torrential downpour and fierce winds wreaked havoc on the district’s infrastructure, with reports of houses being destroyed and damaged in different parts of Alappuzha. The local authorities were quick to assess the extent of the damage and provide assistance to those in need.

Coastal Areas Battling Rough Seas

The stormy weather also led to rough seas battering the coastal areas of Alappuzha, posing a significant threat to the residents living along the shoreline. The absence of sea walls in certain areas exacerbated the situation, leaving many vulnerable to the relentless force of the waves.

Efforts to Mitigate Flooding

As floodwaters inundated low-lying areas, particularly in the region of Kuttanad, officials from the Irrigation department took proactive measures to alleviate the impact. By opening the Thottappally pozhi mouth, they aimed to facilitate the smooth flow of floodwaters from Kuttanad to the sea, thereby reducing the risk of further inundation.

Disruption of Normal Life

The storm resulted in the uprooting of numerous trees and power poles across the district, leading to disruptions in traffic flow on major roads like National Highway 66. The situation was further exacerbated by the declaration of an orange alert for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in Alappuzha on the following day.

As the residents of Alappuzha grapple with the aftermath of the storm, it serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather patterns and the importance of being prepared for such eventualities. The resilience and spirit of the community will undoubtedly shine through as they come together to rebuild and recover from this natural disaster.
